  • Summer flights from Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh
  • UAE passports: visa-free
  • Halal: limited, plan ahead
  • Villas & private boats

The short answer

In summer, direct seasonal flights link Mykonos with Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Kuwait City and Bahrain; the rest of the year you connect via Athens. UAE passport holders enter visa-free; citizens of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman still need a Schengen visa. Halal food is limited but manageable, there is no mosque on the island, and families do best in a villa near the calm beaches of Ornos, Agios Ioannis or Platis Gialos.

Entry

Visa and border rules by passport

United Arab Emirates

UAE citizens can visit the Schengen area, including Greece, visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, under the EU–UAE agreement of 2015.

Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman

A Schengen short-stay visa is still required — apply through the Greek consulate or its visa centre well before summer. Multiple-entry visas with long validity are now widely issued to Gulf citizens. EU–GCC talks in October 2026 were expected to start a visa-waiver process; check the latest rules before you apply.

Fingerprints at the border (EES)

Since 10 April 2026, non-EU visitors register fingerprints and a photo in the EU Entry/Exit System on their first entry. Allow extra time at passport control (Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

Gulf residents with other passports

Rules follow your nationality, not your country of residence. Check the Greek consulate's site for your passport.

Food

Halal food and alcohol-free dining

Horiatiki, the Greek village salad with feta
Salads, vegetables and grilled fish fill most menus

Mykonos has no halal-certified restaurant scene, but eating well is easy if you plan around fish, vegetables and a few known addresses.

  • Halal options: Souvlaki Story in Chora offers halal chicken souvlaki; Nusret's summer steakhouse states that it serves halal meat, without formal certification (HalalSpy, March 2026). Confirm sourcing with the restaurant.
  • Seafood: grilled fish, octopus and calamari are on every waterfront menu. Ask for fish grilled with olive oil and lemon, and check that fryers are not shared with pork.
  • Vegetarian dishes: horiatiki salad, fava, gemista (stuffed vegetables), briam and cheese pies.
  • Words to know: hirino means pork; choris krasi means without wine — useful when sauces are cooked with it.
  • In a villa: many villa services can arrange a private chef — ask in advance about halal sourcing.

Alcohol-free dining is normal in Greek tavernas; fresh juices, Greek coffee and mountain tea are everywhere.

Family & privacy

Beaches, villas and private days at sea

Calm, shallow water at Ornos beach Calm water

Family beaches

Ornos, Agios Ioannis, Platis Gialos and Agios Stefanos have shallow, sheltered water and tavernas on the sand. Topless sunbathing is common on some beaches; these family bays are the most comfortable.

Prayer, dress, weather and time

Prayer

There is no mosque on Mykonos; the nearest are in Athens. Pray in your villa or hotel room and ask the hotel in advance for a quiet space. The qibla from Mykonos is roughly south-east (about 138° from north) — use a compass app, and a prayer-time app set to Mykonos.

Dress

Modest dress is respected everywhere. Cover shoulders and knees in churches and monasteries. For full privacy when swimming, choose a villa pool or a private boat.

An escape from the Gulf summer

July and August average highs are about 28 °C, with a cooling north wind and warm evenings — ideal for families escaping 45 °C at home (climate: National Observatory of Athens via meteo.gr).

Time difference

In summer, Greece is on the same time as Doha, Riyadh, Kuwait and Bahrain, and one hour behind Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In winter, add one hour to each difference.

Shopping

Shopping and tax-free

Matoyianni Street in Chora is the island's luxury shopping lane, with international fashion houses, Greek designers and jewellers open late into the evening. Residents of countries outside the EU can reclaim VAT on purchases of €50 or more per receipt at participating shops: ask for the tax-free form and have it stamped by customs on your final exit from the EU. Common questions

Gulf → Mykonos questions

Are there direct flights to Mykonos from Doha or Dubai?

Yes, in summer. Qatar Airways flies from Doha and flydubai from Dubai on seasonal schedules, and Etihad (Abu Dhabi), Saudia and flynas (Riyadh), Kuwait Airways and Gulf Air also fly direct in season. Outside summer, connect via Athens with Aegean Airlines or Sky Express. Check each airline's timetable.

Do Gulf citizens need a visa for Mykonos?

UAE citizens do not: they can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180. Citizens of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen visa, applied for through the Greek consulate or its visa centre. EU–GCC talks on a waiver were under way in October 2026, so check the current rules.

Is there halal food in Mykonos?

Some. Souvlaki Story in Chora offers halal chicken, and Nusret's summer steakhouse says it serves halal meat without certification (HalalSpy, March 2026). Otherwise, grilled fish, seafood and Greek vegetable dishes are available everywhere, and villa chefs can often source halal meat on request.

Is Mykonos suitable for Muslim families?

Yes, with the right base. Stay in a villa or a family resort near Ornos, Agios Ioannis or Platis Gialos, swim in the calm southern bays or from a private boat, and avoid the party beaches in the afternoon. There is no mosque, so plan to pray in your accommodation.
