Old Port of Mykonos with fishing boats and the town behind

التنقل في ميكونوس

محطتا حافلات، وتاكسي مائي على الساحل الجنوبي، وسيارات أجرة قليلة، وميناءان — كيف تتنقل دون سيارة.

  • KTEL bus ~€2
  • Two bus stations
  • Sea Bus Old ↔ New Port
  • No metro, no rail

The short answer

Walk in Chora. Take the KTEL bus (about €2 a ride) to the beaches, the airport and Ano Mera. Use water taxis to hop along the south coast in summer and the Sea Bus between the Old Port and the New Port. Rent a car or ATV only for the north coast and remote coves — and book taxis in advance in July and August.

Bus

KTEL buses: two stations, every main beach

The Old Port of Mykonos with fishing boats and the town behind
The Old Port: north-side bus station and the Delos boats

KTEL Mykonos runs the island's buses from two stations at either end of Chora:

  • Fabrika (south station), near the windmills: the airport, Ornos, Agios Ioannis, Platis Gialos, Paraga and Paradise.
  • Old Port (north station): the New Port at Tourlos, Agios Stefanos, Ano Mera, Elia, Kalo Livadi, Kalafatis and Panormos.

Tickets: about €2 per ride on short hops — routes cost a little more or less by distance. Buy online at ktelmykonou.e-ticketing.gr, at the kiosks at Fabrika and the Old Port, or in cash from the driver. There is no day pass. Timetables change by season; summer services to the south-coast beaches run frequently from morning to late evening (KTEL Mykonos, mykonosbus.com, +30 22890 26797, checked Oct 2026).

Water taxis and the Sea Bus

SeaBus water taxi in the harbour of Mykonos Harbour

Sea Bus

A small ferry between the Old Port in Chora and the New Port at Tourlos, roughly every half hour from morning to late evening in season. The easy way to reach a cruise ship or ferry with light luggage.

Beach water taxis

From late May to mid-October, boats shuttle from Ornos and Platis Gialos to Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia. Faster than the road in August traffic, and part of the fun.

Taxi

Taxis and transfers

Mykonos has far fewer taxis than visitors in summer, and the queue at the main rank — Taxi Square, by the Old Port — can be long after midnight. Taxis are metered; confirm the fare before you start, and expect a higher night tariff between 00:00 and 05:00 (jmk-airport.gr, checked Oct 2026).

Book ahead

For flights, ferries and late nights, pre-book a transfer or ask your hotel. Many hotels and villas include airport pick-up.

The last stretch

Cars cannot enter Chora's lanes. You will be dropped at the nearest road and walk the rest with your bags.

Pay the meter

Ask for the meter or agree the price first, keep small notes, and ask for a receipt.

Drive

Car, scooter or ATV?

The road down to Kalafatis on the east coast
The east and north coasts are where a car pays off

You do not need a vehicle for Chora and the south-coast beaches. A car makes sense for the north coast (Agios Sostis, Panormos, Ftelia), the far east (Lia, Fokos) and villas in the countryside.

  • Licence: EU licences are fine. Many non-EU drivers also need an International Driving Permit — check with the rental company before you travel.
  • ATVs and scooters are popular and a common cause of injuries: wear a helmet, check your insurance covers them, and never ride after drinking.
  • Parking: there is none inside Chora. Use the car parks at the edges of town and walk in.
  • Roads are narrow and winding, with stone walls and no shoulders. Allow extra time in August.
Ferries

Two ports — check which one is yours

The New Port of Mykonos at Tourlos with ferries Tourlos

New Port (Tourlos)

Scheduled ferries to Piraeus, Rafina, Tinos, Paros, Naxos, Santorini and beyond, and most cruise ships. About 2.5 km north of Chora: Sea Bus, KTEL bus or taxi.

Island hopping
Chora seen from the Old Port quay Chora

Old Port

Right in town. Boats to Delos and some excursion boats leave here — not the inter-island ferries.

Delos boats

Ferry times and fares change by season and operator. Book through the operator or an authorised agent, check the departure port on the ticket, and keep a buffer day before a flight: strong north wind can delay or cancel sailings.

On foot

What is genuinely walkable

All of Chora: the windmills, Little Venice, Paraportiani, the museums, Matoyianni and both bus stations are within about 15 minutes on foot. Megali Ammos beach is a 10-minute walk south of the windmills. Beyond town, distances stretch quickly: Ornos is about 3 km, Platis Gialos about 4 km, Paradise about 5 km and Ano Mera about 8 km by road — bus or taxi distances, especially in summer heat and wind.

Step-free travel: Chora's lanes are narrow, paved and often stepped, and difficult with wheelchairs and pushchairs. Ask your hotel how far the nearest road drop-off is, and check accessibility with each sight before you go. Delos has uneven ground with little shade.

Common questions

Transport questions

How much is the bus in Mykonos?

About €2 for a short ride such as Fabrika to Ornos or the airport to Chora, a little more or less by distance. Buy tickets online at ktelmykonou.e-ticketing.gr, at the Fabrika or Old Port kiosks, or from the driver in cash. There is no day pass (KTEL Mykonos, checked Oct 2026).

Do you need a car in Mykonos?

Not for a Chora-based stay: buses reach the airport, the main beaches and Ano Mera, and water taxis link the south coast. Rent a car for the north coast, the far east and countryside villas. Parking near Chora is scarce and cars cannot enter the old town.

How do I get from the New Port to Chora?

The New Port at Tourlos is about 2.5 km north of Chora. Take the Sea Bus to the Old Port, the KTEL bus to the Old Port station, or a taxi from the rank. Many hotels collect guests; arrange it when you book, as taxis queue on busy ferry days.
