Verdict

The honest answer in one paragraph

Choose Mykonos for sandy beaches, beach clubs, nightlife and a walkable town with Delos on the doorstep. Choose Santorini for the caldera — cliff-top villages, volcanic views, wine and the most famous sunset in Greece. Both are expensive in summer and both get crowded. With six nights or more, do both: high-speed ferries link them in about two to three hours.

Where each island wins

Santorini: the view island

White villages on a cliff above the flooded caldera, with sunset in Oia as the island's ritual. If your holiday is built around views and long dinners, Santorini wins.

Money

Cost and crowds

Both islands sit at the expensive end of Greece. On Mykonos our 2026 daily bands are about €80–140 on a budget and €180–320 mid-range (see trip cost); caldera-view rooms on Santorini command similar or higher prices. Santorini's villages also receive large numbers of cruise passengers in summer, while Mykonos's crowds are concentrated in Chora at sunset and on the party beaches.

In both places, June and September give the best value — warm sea, open venues, thinner crowds.

How to combine Mykonos and Santorini

Oia on Santorini
Two to three hours by high-speed ferry from Mykonos
  • Six nights: Mykonos 3 + Santorini 3, linked by a direct high-speed ferry in season.
  • Eight to ten nights: add Paros or Naxos between them for a slower pace.
  • Fly in and out: both islands have airports with flights to Athens and many European cities in summer — arrive on one, leave from the other.
  • Order: start with Mykonos if you want beaches first and the caldera as a finale.

Common questions

Comparison questions

Is Mykonos or Santorini better?

Mykonos is better for beaches, nightlife and an easy, walkable town with Delos nearby; Santorini is better for dramatic caldera views, sunsets, wine and romance. Families and beach lovers usually prefer Mykonos, honeymooners Santorini. With six nights or more, you can enjoy both.

How far is Mykonos from Santorini?

About two to three hours by high-speed ferry in season, sometimes with stops at Paros, Naxos or Ios. Conventional ships take longer. There are also flights via Athens, but in summer the direct ferry is simpler. Check operator timetables for your date.

Which is more expensive, Mykonos or Santorini?

Both are among the most expensive Greek islands. Mykonos is pricier for beach clubs and nightlife; Santorini for caldera-view hotels. Budget travellers can manage on either by staying outside the famous areas, using buses and visiting in June or September.
