Number one

Delos: Apollo's island

The marble lions on the Terrace of the Lions on Delos
The Terrace of the Lions — the originals are in the site museum

In myth, Apollo and Artemis were born on Delos. In history, it was the religious heart of the Aegean and later a free port packed with merchants' houses — which is why its mosaics are so rich. Today the whole island is an archaeological site, listed by UNESCO in 1990, with no overnight stays.

  • Boat: from the Old Port of Chora, several sailings a day in season; about €25 return (operators, 2026).
  • Site and museum: €20, reduced €10; summer hours 08:00–19:30, last entry 19:00 (Ephorate of Antiquities of Cyclades, 2026). Often closed in the depth of winter — check before you go.
  • Bring: water, a hat and real shoes. There is almost no shade.

By ferry

Tinos, Paros and Naxos

Church of Panagia Evangelistria on Tinos ≈ 30 min

Tinos

Home of Panagia Evangelistria, Greece's most important pilgrimage church, plus marble-carving villages such as Pyrgos and hundreds of dovecotes. Rent a car or join a tour to see the villages.

The fishing harbour of Naoussa on Paros ≈ 1 h

Paros

Naoussa's fishing harbour, long sandy beaches and Parikia's old town. Doable in a day on the morning and evening boats, nicer with one night.

The Portara gateway on Naxos with a ferry in the channel ≈ 75 min

Naxos

The Portara — the giant marble doorway of an unfinished temple — at the harbour, mountain villages inland and some of the longest beaches in the Cyclades.

Brodom

Rhenia and the south-coast cruise

Rhenia seen from Delos across the strait
Rhenia, preko tjesnaca od Delos

Uninhabited Rhenia lies just west of Delos. It has no facilities and some of the clearest water around Mykonos, and it is reached only by boat: excursion boats that combine Delos and a swim stop, or private charters from Ornos Bay.

  • Excursion: look for trips that land on Delos and then anchor off Rhenia for swimming — confirm both in writing.
  • Private boat: half-day and full-day charters from Ornos, priced per boat; see yacht days.
  • Bring everything you need: water, food and shade. Take your rubbish back.

Before you book

Wind, timing and booking

Watch the meltemi

Strong north wind in July and August can cancel small boats to Delos and Rhenia and delay ferries. Book your boat day early in your stay so you can reschedule.

Two tickets for Delos

The boat and the site are paid separately. Buy the boat at the Old Port kiosk or from an agent; the €20 site ticket at the entrance.

Last boat back

Note the return time before you land on any island — missing the last ferry means an unplanned night.

Česta pitanja

Pitanja o jednodnevnim izletima

Koji je najbolji jednodnevni izlet iz Mykonos?

Delos. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site 30–40 minutes by boat from the Old Port, with temples, mosaics and the famous lions. Go on a morning boat, budget about €25 for the return boat and €20 for the site (reduced €10), and allow three to four hours on the island.

Can you do Tinos as a day trip from Mykonos?

Yes. Fast ferries from the New Port take about 30 minutes, so you can leave in the morning and return in the evening. Visit the church of Panagia Evangelistria near the port, then rent a car or join a tour to see the marble villages. Check return times before you go.

Is Paros or Naxos possible in one day from Mykonos?

Both are possible on the first morning and last evening ferries — about an hour to Paros and 75 minutes to Naxos — but they make long days with little time ashore. They are much better as overnight stops on an island-hopping route. Check schedules and keep a buffer for wind.
